A court in Manacor has imposed a restraining order on a pair of Romanian pickpockets who allegedly committed numerous thefts in Porto Cristo. The National Police have arrested the suspects and also two criminals from another group, who withdrew more than €1,000 from the bank using one of the stolen credit cards. The initial investigation began after a member of the public reported that his wallet had been stolen from a shop near Porto Cristo beach. Minutes later, he received a message from his bank informing him that a series of withdrawals totalling more than €1,000 had been made using his credit card. The officers carried out various investigations and managed to identify the alleged perpetrators of the thefts, who have police records for the same crimes committed in different locations in Mallorca and also on the mainland. The pickpockets were part of an itinerant group that travelled around different municipalities during the tourist season to commit thefts and fraud with the stolen cards. National Police officers set up an operation and managed to arrest two of them. The second investigation focused on a couple who had committed several thefts in the same area. The officers learned that a woman would intercept tourists and distract them so that a man could steal their valuables, such as wallets containing documents and cash. The investigators managed to identify the couple, who have a history of similar offences in Palma, Inca and other municipalities on the island. A court in Manacor issued a restraining order against the couple, prohibiting them from entering Mallorca. The National Police's actions are part of the Safe Tourism Plan implemented by the Manacor Police Station with investigative personnel seeking to prevent itinerant crime and reinforce security in the island's tourist centres.
