Shelly Khan is a breast cancer survivor for 28 years now. As gruelling as the experience was when she was just 31 years old – caring for her very young child at the same time – certain life lessons have remained with her to this day. Hers is yet one more story that underscores the value of early detection and taking prompt steps to address cancer. She recalled that it was like any other night; she was changing into her nightdress before going to bed. Her hand just happened to touch the part of her left side breast where a lump was. It wasn’t painful and there were no secretions or any other factor that may have indicated cancer. “I said ‘oh my God, this is not usual’. So I lift my arm up and it was like rolling; like when you rolling a ball, but it wasn’t paining and no substance was coming out,” Khan recalled in an interview with Stabroek Weekend a few days ago.
