Key Points 'High Potential's' midseason finale centers on an art theft and advances the Roman Sinquerra mystery. Morgan grows closer to art expert Rhys, who likely has ulterior motives. Roman's backpack leads to a new suspect, with Morgan left in a precarious situation. We are so, so close to High Potential sewing up a major storyline, but how much closer does that actually get us to Roman Sinquerra? If you’ve been following the ABC crime series, you know that Roman is the ex of Morgan Guillory (Kaitlin Olson) and father of Morgan’s oldest child Ava (Amirah J). But this man’s whereabouts have been dangling over us since High Potential’s very first season. So what’s the deal? While this week’s episode was the series’ midseason finale, it opens up with an art theft that leads us to a whole host of other problems, there’s so much getting us closer to Roman. For one, Ava calls Roman’s friend Arthur (Mekhi Phifer), desperate to get more information about her dad. But, also, Morgan is somewhat driven into the arms of a handsome art recovery expert (Aiden Turner). It’s all very passionate and fascinating … leading us into yet another mystery. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 There are oh-so-many suitors ripe for the picking for Morgan as she works as an LAPD consultant. But Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) is a by-the-book kinda guy and new-to-the-scene Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey) is still establishing trust among his peers at the precinct. But in this latest episode, an art recovery “expert” enters the picture. He’s handsome, has a great accent, and is very knowledgeable about the fine art world. Morgan is suspicious but, when she crosses Wagner in a way that sets him off, it basically sends her straight into the arms of the very guy she’s giving the side eye. Here’s the deal: Aiden Turner, who played Aidan Devane on All My Children for years, poses as Rhys, an art recovery expert who claims he is the “only person who does what he does.” Although Morgan is initially annoyed by Rhys, Wagner’s reaction to her separate investigation with the outsider just pushes her closer to him. Seriously, where is Roman? After Morgan and Ava sifted through Roman’s backpack retrieved by Arthur, they hand it over to Lieutenant Soto (Judy Reyes) and the inner circle for further investigation. Everyone tied to Roman from the evidence in the backpack is accounted for, expect for one unseemly looking character the team can’t identify. Ultimately this questionable fella is the same person who has been following Arthur, and who demands Roman’s backpack in the final nail-biting scene of the episode. Is Morgan in danger? At the end of the midseason finale we see Morgan in a passionate makeout session with Rhys, the art theft expert, only to have her realize in the moment that he is actually the art thief. Our girl is ridiculously smart, but can she connive her way out of that hotel room safely without Rhy knowing she’s on to him? Unfortunately we won’t find out until High Potential’s midseason return on Tuesday, Jan. 6 (keep in mind it will have a new timeslot, too—9 p.m.). Does Wagner have a connection to Roman? Whether or not Captain Wagner is in any way connected to Roman’s case is still up for debate. Initially I thought for sure he had something to do with the man’s disappearance just because of his intense interest in Morgan. However Morgan seems to bring out Wagner’s softer side and he appears fiercely protective over her, as well as the rest of the department. Maybe he’ll end up becoming a key player in finding our mystery man. I’m also inclined to believe that Wagner feels personally responsible for the death of his fiancee, who we learned just a little about in a previous episode. This is probably why he’s so concerned with Morgan’s safety, and the safety of everyone who falls under his command. There’s lots to ponder between now and Jan. 6 when the show returns.
