Mangaluru: The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative Ltd. (CAMPCO), Mangaluru, is pleased to note that Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, has recently conducted a scientific research study and concluded that Arecanut extracts exhibit potent in vitro anticancer activity. According to the findings, these extracts effectively inhibit cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while remaining non-toxic to normal cells. This significant outcome reinforces the growing body of scientific evidence highlighting the potential health benefits of Arecanut when appropriately processed and used. Sri.A.Kishore Kumar Kodgi, President CAMPCO welcomes and appreciates the initiative taken by Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) in undertaking this important research. The study assumes great relevance as it comes close on the heels of the World Health Organization’s recent classification of Arecanut as carcinogenic. Such research-based findings from reputed institutions help bring a balanced and scientific perspective to the discussion on Arecanut. It may be recalled that earlier, Nitte (Deemed to be University) and several other Organisations have also conducted similar studies and concluded that Arecanut is not Carcinogenic but cures Cancer, thereby supporting the traditional and cultural importance of this crop. CAMPCO firmly believes that such scientific validations will go a long way in protecting the interests of lakhs of Arecanut growers and in countering misconceptions surrounding this vital agricultural commodity.
