Warriors Predicted to Cut Ties With Jonathan Kuminga in $86 Million Trade

The Golden State Warriors are off to a hot start to the season. Prior to their matchup on Thursday against the Milwaukee Bucks, they sit at 4-1 and have looked great so far. They are healthy, and the trio of Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green has been stellar. The Warriors are clicking on all cylinders and look like the title contenders that many expected them to be this season. While we still have a long way to go, the Warriors are on pace to be a threat in the West and in the league. Although the trade deadline is a little over three months away, the Warriors are expected to be big players in making a move, and the player they could move is their former lottery pick, forward Jonathan Kuminga. Michael Pina of The Ringer predicted that the Warriors could cut ties with Kuminga for Suns’ $86 million forward, Dillon Brooks. “To the Warriors fans who would rather bob for apples in scalding-hot water than cheer for this man on a nightly basis, please hear me out! It’s a straight-up swap that better fits each team’s life cycle. The Warriors get older but do so with a veteran wing who’s willing to defend and rebound and has learned how to replace a contested jumper with an extra pass,” Pina writes. “Are several Warriors on the record in their belief that Brooks is a dirty player? Yes, indeed. Should that put the kibosh on a trade that will nudge Steph Curry closer to his fifth ring? Absolutely not! The Suns do this because Kuminga just turned 23 years old and, in the eyes of certain beholders, still has All-Star potential. Phoenix is currently terrible and has every incentive to take a swing if there’s even a 10 percent chance that its ceiling can be reached sometime in the next five years.” More news: Lakers Deliver Big News on Timeline for $10 Billion Team Sale A trade for the Warriors that involves Kuminga not only appears to be in the cards, but seems inevitable. Kuminga signed a two-year deal worth $48.5 million in September. The deal includes a team option for the second year, which is exactly what the Warriors wanted. This contract gives the Warriors the ability to trade the 23-year-old after January 15, 2026. The real question isn’t if Kuminga will be traded, but when.
