Danny Rohl sends no-nonsense Rangers goal celebration message to Youssef Chermiti

Danny Rohl has revealed he’s warned Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti about his future goal celebrations. The £8 million man finally got off the mark at Ibrox on Sunday in their 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock. The Portuguese star - who arrived from Everton in the summer - has been questioned by Gers fans over poor displays after signing for such a big fee. And when Chermiti bagged his first goal for the club, he reacted with a hand gesture which appeared to tell the crowd to keep their mouths shut. That didn’t go down too well with supporters, who have watched this Rangers side get off to a disastrous start domestically and in Europe this term. Rohl admits Chermiti let his emotions get the better of him against Killie. And after a pep talk, the German expects a different celebration next time around. Ahead of Wednesday night’s clash with Hibs at Easter Road, Rohl said: “A celebration after a goal is always important. But you have to understand how you celebrate sometimes. “I said when I arrived, it’s not just about improving players on the pitch - it’s also off the pitch. “We’ve spoken about this and I think he knows what he has to do next time. “He got a bit emotional but for me it was more important that he scored at this moment.” When asked if he’ll keep his hands by his side next time, Rohl said: “Yeah, let’s see. For a striker, it’s always important to score. He scored on Sunday and in training also, he’s had some good moments. “These are the small steps I’ve talked about. You can take small steps as a group but also as individuals. But it’s important to understand we also have to increase our limits. If we do that, we’ll be in a good way.” Rohl faces a mammoth week, so soon into his Rangers tenure with Hibs up next then a Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Celtic at Hampden on Sunday. The Ibrox gaffer is aware of the chaos across the city after Brendan Rodgers’ shock resignation and news that 73-year-old Martin O’Neill will take over in the dug-out temporarily. But Rohl says he’s got enough to worry about with his own side to take too much notice of what’s going on at Parkhead. He said: “I know it’s a big topic for everyone in Scottish football at the moment. But you have to understand that my focus is on my team. We have a lot of things to do to take the next step. “The pressure is always on a manager. It’s never nice when a manager is sacked or something like this. But that’s football. It’s why we like it at times and sometimes we don’t like it.” Rohl was quizzed on O’Neill’s appointment and the Northern Irishman’s radio comments before he got the job about Rangers not being a threat to Celtic or Hearts in the title race this season. When asked if that had motivated his players, he said: “Of course, we have big games ahead. Since I arrived every game has been big and the next one is always bigger. “Really, my focus is on Wednesday night because we know where we are in the table at the moment. If we want to climb, we have to win games. “We can’t miss one opportunity to win a game. I must say, I’ve looked in the faces of my players and there’s a big belief now. I have a feeling they believe in what we’re doing.” Rohl is still looking to add a former Rangers player to his coaching staff, with the likes of Neil McCann and Steven Davis touted for the role. The new boss revealed an appointment is getting closer. He said: “We are still looking but we have a shortlist now which is important. “I’m also very clear on the profile now. My next assistant coach has to help me with the content, it can’t be just a name. “It has to be a combination. But they have to understand the league and in the best case, it’s a former player. “Hopefully he can help me with the content on the pitch because then we’d have a great set-up.” Rohl left out £4 million winger Oliver Antman against Killie on Sunday and says the Finn has to fight to get his place back. He said: “He’s available but at the moment it’s a challenge here, which is good. We need this. Everyone has to step up.”
