Uzbekistan Explores South Korean Arms Manufacturers to Strengthen Defense Capabilities - UzDaily.uz

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan is showing interest in South Korean defense industry companies as part of its plans to expand and modernize its military arsenal. According to Chosun Biz, representatives of the Uzbek Agency for Defense Industry expressed interest in several weapons systems presented by South Korean firms SNT Dynamics, Poongsan, and Korea Defense Industry (KDI) during a specialized exhibition. Sources report that the Uzbek delegation inquired about the delivery timeline for a new 120mm mortar system mounted on a wheeled chassis, developed by SNT Dynamics and installed on a light tactical vehicle. This system, designed to replace outdated 107mm mortars, offers enhanced mobility and effective operation in rugged terrain. It is expected to enter trial use with the Republic of Korea Marine Corps next year. The Uzbek delegation also visited the SNT Dynamics plant in Changwon to continue discussions on potential purchases. Reports indicate that Tashkent is interested in acquiring several dozen of these systems and plans to eventually master the technology for integrating similar complexes into its own armored vehicles. Over the past year, Uzbekistan has actively expanded cooperation with foreign arms manufacturers to modernize its armed forces and develop its domestic defense-industrial potential. In January 2025, the country signed an agreement with Turkish Aerospace Industries to purchase ANKA strike drones, including operator training and the creation of ground control stations—a first for Uzbekistan in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles. Earlier, in 2024, the U.S. company Sierra Nevada Corporation signed a $64.2 million contract to restore and maintain Pilatus PC-12 transport aircraft used by the Uzbek military. Additionally, Uzbekistan is gradually reducing its reliance on traditional Russian suppliers in the aviation sector. Negotiations are reportedly underway for the purchase of Chinese JF-17 Block 3 multirole fighters, as part of a broader strategy to diversify sources of military equipment and technology.
