Timberwolves Urged to Trade for Star PG Amid Suspension

The Minnesota Timberwolves are a .500 team through their first six games of the 2025-26 NBA season. The Western Conference’s runner-up for the last two seasons is doing their best to make it back to the Conference Finals, and possibly even break through for the franchise’s first-ever Finals appearance. As of now, the Timberwolves feel a bit limited, thanks in part to their roster construction. They have no true point guard right now, relying on a 38-year-old Mike Conley and an out-of-position Donte DiVincenzo to carry the workload. But with rumblings of unhappiness within the Memphis Grizzlies and a one-game suspension issued by the team, could Minnesota make a run at trading for disgruntled star Ja Morant? Timberwolves Urged to Trade for Ja Morant Given the Minnesota Timberwolves’ current situation at point guard, CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn urged the Wolves to trade for the Memphis Grizzlies star. A pairing of Morant and Anthony Edwards would create one of the most athletic backcourt duos we’ve ever seen on a basketball court. “Oh, you don’t think the Timberwolves would make a move this drastic right after reaching the Western Conference finals? Well, they did so a year ago when they traded Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo,” wrote Quinn. “Constructing the trade would be difficult. The Timberwolves are effectively pick-less. Some combination of the youngsters would be a start, but realistically, just to match salary, one of the older front court players would have to be in the deal. As Memphis has no need for either Randle or Rudy Gobert, this would have to become a three-team deal.” In any hypothetical trade, the Timberwolves would be parting ways with at least one key contributor from their Conference Finals run last season, but in the long run, it may be worth it. Trading Rudy Gobert seems like the right way to go, as his style of play would slow down the new look, floor-running Timberwolves. Dumping Gobert and inserting Naz Reid at the five would create a starting lineup that gives opponents nightmares with their spacing, and the athleticism of Morant, Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, and Julius Randle would likely be too much for a lot of teams to handle. The price would be steep, but it’s something Minnesota should absolutely consider. Are the Grizzlies Really Going to Trade Ja Morant? Back in February, Memphis Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman had to address trade rumors surrounding Morant as the trade deadline came and went. At the time, he sounded like an executive fairly attached to his star point guard. “I can’t blame other ‘executives’ for fantasizing about us trading Ja. But it’s just that – fantasy. We are not trading Ja,” Kleiman told The Daily Memphian’s Drew Hill. “Continue to underestimate Ja, this team and this city, and we will let our performance on the floor speak for itself. I’m not going to give this nonsense further oxygen and look forward to getting back to basketball.” But just nine months removed from that quote, things have gotten weird in Memphis, to say the least. After last week’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Morant answered questions postgame from the locker room, and he had some short but poignant responses to the media. The Grizzlies suspended Morant one game for conduct detrimental to the team, and it’s starting to feel like cracks are forming in the relationship. It remains unclear if the former No. 2 pick in the 2019 NBA draft wants out of Memphis, or if he’s even available for trade. But something is clearly going wrong between Morant and head coach Tuomas Iliaso, and we could be hitting a breaking point soon.
