Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, who chaired a meeting in the Corporation on Monday to review the ongoing mosquito eradication exercise here, urged health officials to accelerate the work to destroy mosquito breeding grounds. Mr. Jegan said he was being flooded with complaints pertaining to mosquito menace and the Corporation’s failure to destroy mosquito breeding grounds before the onset of northeast monsoon. The recent showers, which did not have an adverse impact on the public, caused water stagnation in vacant plots in wards 2, 16 and 17, all owned by individuals. However, the water stagnation in the plots were drained immediately. Even though oil balls and anti-mosquito chemicals were being used by the Corporation, only 50% of the issue had been solved and, hence, the urban civic body had to accelerate its operation in hitherto uncovered areas with fumigation being done by vehicle-mounted and hand-held equipment. Around 250 anti-dengue workers had been deployed to visit the houses and construction sites to identify the mosquito breeding grounds, if any. Steps had been taken to remove the plastic waste generated in marriage halls, and scrap yards had been instructed to remove the waste immediately. While claiming that no dengue case was reported from any part of Thoothukudi Corporation, Mr. Jegan urged health officials to intensify their operations to avert any outbreak of the vector-borne disease. Corporation Commissioner C. Priyanka, City Health Officer Saroja and sanitary department officials participated in the meeting.
