Success Story: Meet Dhirendra Kumar, Farmer's Son Who Became Officer In Sports Ministry

A resident of Chitrauli, Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Dhirendra Kumar, also known as Dheeraj, has been selected for the position of District Youth Officer in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. He was selected through the Pratibha Portal operated by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This portal provides opportunities to candidates who are not finally selected after reaching the UPSC interview. Dheeraj received his primary education from the Government Middle School in his village, Chitrauli. He then completed his high school education in Maniari (Muzaffarpur), where he secured a place in the district’s top 5 merit list in the Matriculation and Intermediate examinations. According to News18 Hindi, Kumar successfully completed a B.Tech and M.Sc. programme in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He is currently pursuing a PhD in International Relations from the School of International Studies from the same university. UPSC Preparation It should be noted that reaching the UPSC interview is considered a significant achievement in itself. Dheeraj’s dream is to pass the UPSC exam and become an IAS officer in the future. He is still preparing for this. Dheeraj’s father, the late Brajkishore Rai, passed away in June this year. Dheeraj explains that the situation was very difficult at that time. “I thought I would lose everything because I was pursuing my PhD at that time.” His father’s passing at the same time was a very difficult time, but the motivation of his mother and family gave him courage. Dheeraj explains that his father was a farmer in the village and his mother is a homemaker. He has two brothers and three sisters. Dheeraj is the youngest, and his family had to sell their land to fund his education. This thought always lingered in his mind. He started preparing for the UPSC while studying engineering. On his second attempt, he was selected for the position of District Youth Officer in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Government of India, through the Pratibha Setu portal. Dheeraj credits his parents and siblings for their support through every difficult situation. He conveys a message to other students, “No matter how adverse the circumstances, they will always succumb to your dedication and honest hard work. Therefore, set a clear goal and work diligently towards it. Success may not happen overnight, but one day you will surely achieve it.”
