'Proper' beer bar to open in historic Manchester spot once home to beloved restaurant

A big name in the UK’s craft beer scene has announced they will be opening their first location in the city centre later this year. Head of Steam, which was first established 30 years ago, now has 15 locations nationwide, including sites in Cardiff, Sheffield, Leeds and Huddersfield. It also has a venue in Didsbury , which opened in 2018. Self proclaimed as ‘purveyors of great beer’, the brand is known for its inclusive, innovative approach to craft beer. Alongside its own selections of IPAs and lagers, it also serves a range of beers from top brands, including popular Belgium brewers. It has been announced that Head of Steam will open their 16th bar - and their first new opening in six years - on Newton Street, on the edge of the Northern Quarter . Stay connected with our City Life newsletter here The historic Grade II-listed building was home to the Japanese-fusion restaurant and bar Cottonopolis, which closed its doors after eight years in January last year, and, after that, the Lamb of Tartary which closed last September after just six months of operation. The 2,800 ft venue will boast Head of Steam’s ‘signature’ industrial design, with exposed brickwork and a number of original features of the building, which dates back to the late 19th century, restored to be given a new life. With space for 180 guests, seating 120, there will also be a striking circular bar taking centre stage. The bar will boast 30 beer lines serving 24 keg and 6 cask brews, and will also include a rotating selection of cans and bottles for drinkers to pick from. There will be an expertly-selected choice of beers from the UK craft scene, as well as a vast collection of Belgian beers. In addition, there’ll be a fresh cocktail menu and quality spirits range. Sports will also play a big role in the venue, with augmented reality darts and live games and matches shown across six screens throughout the week. There will also be a pop-up kitchen from a local operator, who has not been named yet but has been teased that it will also mark their own debut in the city centre. Mark Connor, Head of Operations & Brand for The Head of Steam, said: “We’re excited to be joining the Northern Quarter community and to bring our favourite UK brewers, alongside classics from our extensive Belgian range, to this vibrant part of the city. “The location is incredible, and being able to offer something new and exciting to the area is fantastic for us. We can’t wait to open our doors later this year, meet our neighbours, and become a part of this iconic area of Manchester.” An official opening date has not yet been announced, but it has been said it will be later this year. Head of Steam will be based on 16 Newton Street, Manchester, M1 2AE. Join our Manchester Food and Drink WhatsApp group HERE
