Staten Island’s first charter school will mark 15th year with open houses at two campuses

New World Prep Charter School, Staten Island’s first charter school, will mark its 15th year of serving North Shore elementary and middle school youth with an open house for the parents of students entering kindergarten - 5th grade at its new, state of the art, elementary school campus at 26 Sharpe Ave. in Port Richmond. The open house will be Saturday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. till noon. Parents of kindergarten through 5th graders will tour the new facility and meet the New World Prep elementary school faculty and students. Families will have an opportunity to apply for available class seats at the new elementary school campus at the Nov. 15 open house The school is located on the site of the former St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church in Port Richmond. This inaugural open house at the newly built campus will include refreshments and applications for new students for the charter schooll grades kindergarten through 6th. No RSVP is needed . New World Prep also operates a middle school at 285 Clove Rd. at Castleton Avenue at the former Our Lady of Mt Carmel parish school. The middle school at 285 Clove Rd will host a separate open house on Thursday, Nov. 6 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. for families interested in sending their 6th, 7th and 8th graders to New World Prep. For that tour on November 6, parking is available in the Our Lady of Mt Carmel parking lot at the corner of Castleton Avenue and Clove Road. New World Preparatory Charter School is chartered by the State University of New York and is free to all its students. The school is an extended day program with classes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional classes are offered in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Spanish is also taught as an elective, along with technology, STEAM, art, music, theatre and social emotional learning. The school primarily serves students living on Staten Island’s North Shore, including families where a language other than English is spoken in the home. On hand at both open houses will be the school’s president, Eugene Foley, and current board chair, Angelo Aponte, retired secretary of the New York State Senate, retired executive vice president of finance for the College of Staten Island, and former state commissioner of Housing and Community Renewal Project Hospitality founded the school believing that education is a pathway out of poverty.
