Air pollution does not just harm your lungs, it also damages your skin. From microscopic dust particles and smog, to toxins released by vehicles and industrial emissions, the air around us is an invisible enemy to our complexion. Dust, smoke and harmful particles in the air tend to clog pores, trigger acne, cause dryness, and make your skin look dull and tired. Dr Shareefa Chause, Dermatologist, Dr Shareefa Skin care clinic, Mumbai says, "Acne can be embarrassing and concerning and take a toll on one’s self-esteem. Over time, pollution can also speed up signs of ageing, like wrinkles and dark spots. So, it is necessary to pay attention to your skin health. Make sure to cleanse twice daily to remove dirt and pollutants." She further says that it is essential to use a gentle face wash recommended by the expert that doesn’t strip away natural oils. "Then make sure to follow up with a toner, hydrating serum and moisturiser to restore hydration and protect the skin barrier from getting damaged due to pollution. Use a good moisturiser as suggested by the expert and avoid any over-the-counter product. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 50 as recommended by the expert," she adds. It is also important to eat foods loaded with antioxidants, Vitamin C, for improving skin health. Drinking plenty of water, eating fruits and vegetables, and avoiding smoking also make a big difference. Not many people know but exfoliation is also extremely important.
