Polish consortium unveils modular robotic recon system to NATO

During a presentation for members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s Defense and Security Committee, solutions developed by the WITPiS and Chema DS consortium were demonstrated, according to a statement posted by Chema DS. Among the systems shown, the reconnaissance variant of the KUNA Unmanned Ground Weapon System drew attention. The company said the platform is equipped with advanced optoelectronic and communications systems. The demonstration took place at the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade named after Gen. Tadeusz Kościuszko. Chema DS said the event served as further confirmation of the consortium’s capabilities in supporting reconnaissance missions and integrating unmanned systems within modern combat structures. Chema DS also expressed appreciation to Forcepol sp. z o.o. for providing support in delivering electromechanical masts used in the presentation. On its website, Chema DS stated that the system was “designed and built on the basis of observations and experience from the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine.” The company said the system is intended as “a comprehensive response to the identified needs of Ukrainian Special Forces operators in difficult combat conditions,” based on observations, remarks, and lessons drawn from the contemporary battlefield. The system features a modular, multi-role structure that can be configured depending on the mission. According to the company, its core elements are the KUNA unmanned ground platform and the RAVEN unmanned aerial vehicle. The company said the vehicle can move to a designated location, while the RAVEN drone conducts observation from the air and then returns to the vehicle’s current position. Chema DS explained that the drone also functions as a data relay, enabling remote control of the KUNA platform through the aerial link. This arrangement increases the operational range of the vehicle and expands the range of telemetry and video transmission. The company noted that this capability is especially important when operating in difficult terrain or in environments where access to GNSS signals is limited. Chema DS said its autonomous capability enables it to travel across terrain and reach designated points without a crew onboard. Both route programming and remote control can be carried out through the aerial drone, extending the operational reach of the ground platform. The KUNA is equipped with LIDAR sensors, cameras, and other detection systems that allow it to navigate obstacles independently, improving its ability to operate in unpredictable or contested terrain. Its tracked configuration provides high mobility, allowing it to travel across uneven, sandy, muddy, or rocky ground where wheeled vehicles may struggle. The system can also be adapted to different mission profiles through interchangeable modules. Chema DS said these modules were designed with logistics in mind and include mounting points for tools, sensor modules, and other mission equipment. A transport module enables the platform to carry various loads, including tools, equipment, construction materials, or humanitarian supplies. The company added that both the vehicle and the modules include built-in forklift attachment points to simplify loading, unloading, and reconfiguration.
