While many people enjoy this cooler climate, it also carries health risks, particularly an increased threat of infections. The fall in temperature creates ideal conditions for viruses and bacteria to thrive, leading to a rise in several illnesses, including pneumonia. This condition poses the greatest risk to children and the elderly, whose immune systems are generally more vulnerable. But why does the risk of pneumonia rise specifically after Diwali? What are the warning signs? And how can it be prevented? Dr Dilip Singh, Chief Medical Superintendent at Government Medical College, Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, spoke with News18 to provide insights. Why Pneumonia Risk Increases After Diwali? According to Dr Singh, after Diwali, the weather shifts rapidly, nights become damp and chilly, and cold winds pick up. These conditions create an environment where pneumonia-causing viruses become active. During this time, children and older adults often have weakened immunity, making them more susceptible to infections, including pneumonia. 3 Main Causes Behind The Rise In Pneumonia Cases Air Pollution: Firecrackers during Diwali cause a spike in air pollution. The fine particulate matter in the air can reach deep into the lungs, irritating the respiratory system and increasing the likelihood of pneumonia, particularly in individuals with pre-existing lung conditions. Weakened Immunity: Festive indulgences, such as sugary and heavy foods, can compromise the immune system. A weaker immune response makes it easier for viruses and bacteria to cause infection, including pneumonia. Smoking and Alcohol Consumption: Diwali celebrations often include smoking and alcohol, both of which harm the lungs and reduce their capacity to fight off infections. This further raises the risk of developing pneumonia. How To Prevent Pneumonia Post-Diwali? To reduce the risk of pneumonia, especially in children and elderly individuals, Dr Singh recommends the following: Keep indoor air clean: Use air purifiers and keep your surroundings tidy to minimise exposure to pollutants. Eat healthily: Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet to help boost your immune system. Seek medical help early: If you or a loved one develops breathing difficulty, persistent cough, or chest pain, consult a doctor without delay. Stay physically active: Gentle, regular exercise can help maintain overall health and immunity. Avoid smoking and alcohol: Protect your lungs by staying away from habits that impair their function. While the festive season brings joy, it also requires extra attention to health, especially as the seasons change. By taking simple preventive measures, the risk of pneumonia can be significantly reduced, ensuring that the celebrations don’t end in a hospital visit.
