KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Solidarity Fund (ISF) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have signed an agreement to provide humanitarian assistance to victims of the recent earthquakes in eastern Afghanistan. In a statement, the OIC said the agreement was signed between Mohammad bin Suleiman Aba Al-Khail, Executive Director of the Islamic Solidarity Fund, and Mohammad Saeed Al-Ayesh, Head of the OIC Office in Kabul. It said the assistance will be distributed to affected families through the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS). “The financial aid comes as part of the ISF’s ongoing humanitarian efforts and its noble responsibility to support the people of the Islamic world, especially amid continuing humanitarian crises that require effective solidarity and joint response,” the statement added. Government figures show that the recent earthquakes in the eastern provinces claimed the lives of 2,205 people and injured 3,640 others in Kunar, while 12 people were killed and 255 injured in Nangarhar, and 80 others were wounded in Laghman. The disaster also destroyed 6,782 houses. Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) said more than $6.9 million was needed to support the earthquake victims in eastern Afghanistan, but nearly $6 million was still unfunded, leaving significant gaps for maintaining essential operations.
