Note from the editor: Help us meet a $60K pledge challenge for education reporting

In a recent series of columns, I wrote about the work done by Post and Courier journalists who produced some of the projects aided this year by the philanthropic support that underpins much of our investigative and public service journalism. The examples included work by our Education Lab, a team of three reporters and an editor focused on covering issues and policies affecting South Carolina’s education system. The Post and Courier’s nonprofit Public Service and Investigative Fund, and specifically its education arm, supports the important mission of this team. We recently learned of a $60,000 matching pledge for education coverage from the South Carolina Children’s Fund, which is dedicated to helping children in our state have access to a high-quality education. This means we have the opportunity to double the impact of the pledge. So we’ve set a goal to raise donations from others to match or exceed the $60,000. We hope to hit the mark by the end of November. The money will be devoted exclusively to the Education Lab. In just the last couple of months, the education team’s wide-ranging coverage has included stories about innovations in Charleston County School District’s tutoring program, struggles of parents to find after-school care, the state of pre-kindergarten early education, the status of South Carolina’s K-12 vouchers program, rates of unvaccinated students, the Greenville district’s efforts to cover costs for rapid school growth, and much more.
