New Tech Boosts Belize’s Battle Against Sargassum Invasion If you’ve been to the beach lately, especially in places like San Pedro, you’ve probably seen thick, brown mats of sargassum piling up along the shore. It’s been a tough few months for coastal communities and the tourism industry. But there’s some good news. On Friday, the Department of the Environment got a major helping hand, a donation of new equipment and software that’ll help Belize track and manage sargassum more effectively. And according to Area Representative Andre Perez, this could make a real difference. Andre Perez, Area Rep., Belize Rural South “I must admit, this year was a terrible year. Really, the entire country, the Caribbean, you know, the entire Caribbean… So, with this that was presented to the DOE, with the different technology, we were able to track all these huge mats of sargassum coming across the Caribbean, we’ll be able to attack in a more smart way. We’ll have to do it in a more intelligent way, instead of just being by the beach and preparing because there are days when you have no sargassum, and there are days when it comes for days. So, we can prepare that it’s coming our way and then we prepare, and that is important because we are fighting from all corners. It’s always a battle constantly. It’s a never-ending battle.”
