The National Advocacy Platform has welcomed the appointment of the new Cabinet by President Arthur Peter Mutharika, describing it as an opportunity to promote inclusive and vision-driven leadership. The civil society network says the composition of the Cabinet reflects a mix of political experience and technical expertise that could help sustain governance stability and policy continuity. However, Chairperson of the platform Benedicto Kondowe has pointed out gaps in inclusivity, noting limited representation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities, despite Malawi’s commitments to equality and diversity. Kondowe has also urged government to maintain fiscal discipline, noting that while the appointment of 21 ministers shows some restraint, a smaller Cabinet would demonstrate stronger commitment to efficiency and cost control. He further observes that ministries such as Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, and Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism are key to driving recovery and structural transformation, but success will depend on accountability and coordinated action. Kondowe has emphasized the need for the new Cabinet to operate with integrity and transparency, including public declaration of assets and adherence to performance-based assessments. NAP concludes by urging the administration to prioritize inclusivity, accountability, and measurable results to deliver on national development goals and restore public confidence in government.
