HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested a 41-year-old man, Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa, a suspect in the murder of Ruwa businessman Joseph Mutangadura, following a violent incident in Sanyati that left a police officer dead and another seriously injured early Sunday. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that Constable Courage Muchechesi was shot and killed at ZRP Sanyati after Mutasa allegedly opened fire on officers who were attempting to apprehend him in connection with the August 2025 murder of Mutangadura. Before killing Constable Muchechesi, Mutasa reportedly shot Detective Constable Ngwenya of the CID Homicide Division, who was part of the arrest team. After the attack, the suspect allegedly robbed a civilian, Abraham Mayavo (30), of US$5 as the man was making a report at the police station. The police said Mutasa was eventually apprehended after members of the public in Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari, and Patchway joined forces with police to track and subdue him. Nyathi commended the public for their swift action and cooperation, saying more details would be released in due course. The latest arrest follows that of Phillip Mutasa (38), who was taken into custody by CID Homicide detectives in Mkoba 6, Gweru, on October 3 in connection with the same Ruwa murder case. He allegedly confessed to participating in the August 17 killing of businessman Joseph Mutangadura and named seven accomplices who are still on the run. According to police investigations, Mutangadura, a 67-year-old entrepreneur who owned Mutangaz Hideout, Mutangaz Panyama, and Lisheen Estate in Ruwa, was fatally shot in the stomach when a gang of masked robbers broke into his home and business premises, Mutangadura Hideout, along Dunstan Road. The attackers, armed with pistols, claw bars and hammers, overpowered a security guard before entering the house and assaulting the couple. Mutangadura’s wife sustained injuries and survived the ordeal, while the businessman was pronounced dead upon arrival at Eden Hospital in Windsor, Ruwa. The robbers escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and valuables. The ZRP launched a nationwide manhunt for the remaining suspects believed to be part of the armed gang responsible for Mutangadura’s murder. Commissioner Nyathi urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue assisting law enforcement agencies with information leading to the arrest of the outstanding suspects.
