Mallorca’s skies will once again be filled with colour this autumn as the IBBF Balloon Festival returns to Capdepera for its second edition. Organised by Illes Balears Ballooning, the event will take place from October 22 to 26, featuring 25 hot air balloons piloted by crews from more than ten different countries. Five days of flights over Mallorca The IBBF, short for Illes Balears Balloon Festival, is fast becoming one of Mallorca’s most distinctive autumn attractions. Across five days, balloon teams from across Europe and beyond will take to the skies for morning and evening flights, creating striking displays above the island’s eastern coastline. The festival will feature a mix of traditional and novelty balloons, including celestial-themed designs, animal shapes, and a vintage montgolfière. Among this year’s standout entries are a rocket, frog, pair of birds, child’s smiling face, piglet, and a giant ice cream cone, all of which will be visible at various points throughout the week. Greater gender balance in ballooning This year marks a milestone for the event, with one-third of participating pilots being women. The figure represents a growing trend towards greater inclusivity in competitive ballooning, traditionally a male-dominated sport. Organisers say the increase in female representation highlights a broader shift within the sector, aligning with international efforts to make air sports more accessible and diverse. Flights at sunrise and sunset Flights are scheduled to take place twice daily, beginning at 8am and 6pm to coincide with Mallorca’s sunrise and sunset. The exact launch locations will be announced two hours before each flight via the IB Ballooning website and its social media channels, adding an element of anticipation for those hoping to watch the take-offs. Spectators are encouraged to follow updates online, as locations may vary depending on wind and weather conditions. Pilots from across Europe and beyond The 2025 edition will welcome ballooning teams from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, Poland, and the United States, alongside local pilots from Mallorca and Catalonia. A world champion pilot from France is among the confirmed participants, adding further prestige to the growing event. The international turnout underlines the IBBF’s growing reputation within the European ballooning circuit. A signature Autumn event for Mallorca The Illes Balears Balloon Festival has quickly become a highlight of the island’s autumn calendar, attracting both local residents and international visitors. With its mix of global participants, creative balloon designs and scenic backdrops, the event showcases Mallorca’s cultural and touristic appeal beyond the summer season.
