An East Kilbride woman is set to launch her debut book inspired by her daughter’s dyslexia diagnosis. Debut author, Marissa McCudden, is set to launch her new book, ‘There’s Lots of Different Types of Clever’ with her illustrator Michael Spy. The event will be held on Friday, November 7, at the Cartvale in Busby. This vibrant picture book will resonate with all children, as it emphasises the importance of each and every one of our children’s gifts and talents. The duo will bring a much-needed nurturing message to children who may experience the impacts of dyslexia and ASD before being identified or diagnosed as such. Marissa said: “The vision is to build the self-esteem of children who think they are not clever, through the everyday struggles of reading, writing, spelling, maths etc. when their ‘clever’ might lie elsewhere. “It’s inspired by my daughter’s struggles with dyslexia and aimed to boost self esteem amongst children who think they’re not clever if they struggle academically but have a lot to offer with other gifts and talents in other areas. “For example, my daughter, Claudia, is a competitive gymnast having won the county dance/Acro championship three years running but thought she wasn’t clever! Marissa, a primary teacher for nearly 20 years, saw this as a common theme in the classroom too. Through one of life’s curve balls, Marissa found the motivation to bring this book to life, but with no knowledge of the industry or where to start. Fate would give her a hand! After a chance conversation with family Marissa realised the extent of Michael’s talents and that he happened to be the perfect candidate! He was able to bring her visions to life with his heart warming and humorous illustrations.
