Police say a young Blind Bay resident was stirred awake by a person in her bedroom who she thought was her mother. A Blind Bay woman called Salmon Arm RCMP at 10 a.m. on Oct. 9 to report that an unknown woman had broken into her house and stolen some items. Police met with the caller, who explained her school-aged daughter was awoken around 6:30 a.m. by the unknown woman in her bedroom. It was dark, the daughter thought the stranger was her mother and went back to sleep. “The complainant did not realize what had happened until later that morning when taking her daughter to school, who asked why the complainant was in her room…,” said Salmon Arm RCMP spokesperson Const. Andrew Hodges in a news release. Police found no forced entry, as the woman’s husband had left early for work and had left the front door unlocked, which was the suspected entry point. “When the complainant returned home, she noticed several items missing, including two laptops, two cell phones, $100 cash, tools and a bicycle,” said Hodges, adding police received two other reports of a suspicious female in the area, “but despite extensive patrols over several hours, could not locate her.” Police did find the stolen bicycle down the road from the residence, “where it was suspected the female possibly hitchhiked a ride after making her way to the Trans Canada Highway.” Forensic identification was completed on several items; however, no fingerprints were obtained.
