Zachery Bernier-Michaud’s Ironman personal best is eight hours and 11 minutes. Born in Montreal, raised in Bangkok, and now living in Kelowna, Bernier-Michaud’s success is a story of grit, heart, and unwavering support of a community that believed in him. His triathlon journey began nearly six years ago in Thailand, inspired by his principal, an Ironman triathlete, to try the sport. His first attempt sparked a passion, which led him to spending his savings on a bicycle and joining cross-country and swim teams. When Bernier-Michaud moved to Kelowna to study kinesiology at UBC Okanagan, he found a new home at the YMCA of Southern Interior B.C, training there five to six times a week. “My life would be very different without the YMCA. The location is convenient, the student membership is affordable, and the hours of operation are excellent. There’s always a lane open in the pool and space in the gym when I come here,” said Bernier-Michaud. He said his journey is fueled by a deep passion for endurance sports and a commitment to becoming the best version of himself. The 21-year-old encourages others to believe in themselves and to never give up on their dreams. He emphasized the importance of youth participation in sports, not just for physical health, but for building friendships, resilience, confidence, and lifelong skills. “It’s so important for children and youth to get involved in sports because sports serve as a powerful platform for instilling valuable life skills. Sports teach us how to build strong relationships with peers and coaches, and foster discipline and self-belief,” said Bernier-Michaud.
