COLLEGE BASKETBALL Former Old Dominion coach Jeff Jones was named to two committees that give him a role in helping to determine who receives bids to the NCAA Tournament and the National Invitation Tournament. Jones was named the chair of the 2026 NIT Selection Committee after serving on that group last year. He was also named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Advisory Committee, which will advise the NCAA Tournament committee on seeding for teams in higher brackets. COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY W&M teams 2nd, 4th in CAA meet William & Mary’s women were second and its men were fourth in Friday’s Coastal Athletic Association championship meet at Ocean County Park in Lakewood, New Jersey. Tribe women’s senior Perry Irons placed second among 118 runners with the sixth-fastest 6-kilometer time in W&M history, 20 minutes, 1.60 seconds. Led by gold medalist Katie Blount (19:55.00), Elon’s women won with 28 points, followed by the Tribe (68), Northeastern (100), host Monmouth (102) and the College of Charleston (141). Hampton was 10th in the 12-team field with 299. W&M sophomore Molley Weithman repeated as an All-CAA performer alongside Irons, taking 13th in 21:27.10. Kelly Ann Sutterfield was 17th in 21:35.80. In the men’s 8K race, Tribe junior Hayes Trapp took third for the second year in a row. He finished in 23:37.90, trailing Hofstra teammates Fredrick Kipkosgei (23:01.60) and Abraham Longosiwa (23:25.60) in the field of 104. Hofstra won the team trophy with 44 points, followed by Northeastern (51), Stony Brook (67) and W&M (69). Hampton placed 11th with 326, led by 54th-place Khalid Hamid in 25:55.90. Four Tribe men gained all-conference acclaim: Trapp, senior Brendan DiStefano (10th, 24:05.70), redshirt freshman Caleb Wilcox (13th, 24:12.10) and true freshman Eli Phillips (15th, 24:13.00). UVA men win ACC Virginia won the men’s ACC championship for the fifth time overall and the first time since 2008, totaling 61 points to runner-up Syracuse’s 65 and third-place Wake Forest’s 111 at Louisville’s E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. Notre Dame (114) and Virginia Tech (152) completed the top five among 17 teams. UVA entered the meet ranked fourth nationally, while Wake was 10th. Gary Martin paced the Cavaliers, finishing 8 kilometers in 22:39.4 for second place behind Wake Forest’s Rocky Hansen (22:18.6), who broke the course record by about 40 seconds. Justin Wachtel (10th place, 22:59.7) Nate Mountain (12th, 23:00.5) and Brett Gardner (13, 23:01.5) also sparked UVA. In the women’s race, NC State (28 points), Notre Dame (89), North Carolina (127), Stanford (150) and UVA (170) finished 1-5. Virginia Tech was eighth at 214. In the women’s 6K race, Tatum David led UVA by finishing 17th in 19:56.5, while Gillian Bushee was 18th in 19:59.1. The Wolfpack’s Angelina Napoleon won in a course-record 19:13.9. Virginia Tech’s George Couttie (fourth) and Nicholas Kipchirchir (20th) gained men’s All-ACC honors, and 21st-place woman Katie Bohike also gained that award. COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER Elon ousts W&M in CAA quarterfinal Elon ended William & Mary’s season with a 1-0 victory over the Tribe in a Coastal Athletic Association quarterfinal at Albert-Daly Field. Ashlee Brehio scored about five minutes into the match off a deep free kick. She knocked the ball through goalkeeper Gwen Doughty’s legs for her fourth goal of the season. The Tribe (7-7-4) outshot the Phoenix 18-11 and put six shots on goal, but Elon keeper Katie Bisgrove made a key late save on Ivey Crain to preserve the victory. Elon (11-2-5) will travel to take on South Division top seed UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m. Sunday. UVA coach Swanson gains 500th career victory Coach Steve Swanson gained his 500th career victory as No. 7 Virginia defeated Boston College 2-0 in Charlottesville. He became the seventh women’s soccer coach to reach that mark; four of them are active. Maggie Cagle and Allie Ross converted penalty kicks in the 53rd and 59th minutes, respectively. Tatum Galvin was taken down in the box to set up the first goal, and a hand-ball in the box off a crossing pass led to the second goal. Swanson has compiled his victories in stints with Dartmouth, Stanford and UVA (12-2-3, 6-2-2 ACC), which got the fifth seed for the ACC Tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Florida State in a quarterfinal at 8 p.m. Sunday in Tallahassee. The victor will face top-seeded Stanford on Nov. 6 in the semifinals in Cary, North Carolina. BC, which did not qualify for the six-team tournament, fell to 5-8-5, 1-7-2. COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY ODU wins on Senior Day Amelie Zielcke scored twice as Old Dominion celebrated Senior Day by defeating Georgetown 3-1. Her goals in the 18th and 35th minutes gave the Monarchs (8-9, 5-2 Big East) a 2-0 lead, and Sian Emslie made it 3-0 in the 47th. The Hoyas (5-12, 1-6) averted a shutout with Ellie Johnson’s goal in the 52nd minute, but ODU outshot them 17-4. Even before the game, ODU knew it had gained the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. The Monarchs will face second-seeded Connecticut on Nov. 7 in Lynchburg. Liberty is the top seed. W&M falls to Drexel Drexel (12-7, 4-2 Coastal Athletic Association) overcame William & Mary 5-1 in Philadelphia, dropping the Tribe to 1-16, 0-7. Sophomore Ava Rossman scored her first college goal in the 24th minute for W&M, cutting the Tribe’s deficit to 3-1. Valentina Van Helem scored twice in the first 8:06 for the Dragons. She and Pili Lemoine each had two goals and an assist. The Tribe, which didn’t qualify for the four-team CAA tourney, will wrap up its season Sunday against La Salle in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. COLLEGE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Regent coach takes 50th victory Fifth-year coach Katelyn Totherow gained her 50th victory with Regent as the Royals (14-8) swept Washington Adventist 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-14) in Takoma Park, Maryland. Erin Saunders had 10 kills, Rylee Stewart had 15 assists and Eliana Winn had five blocks for Regent.
