CEDAR HILL, Mo. - Kati Fisher lost her life in 2006 at the age of 13. She had a heart defect, but childhood friend Courtney Jackson said Kati never complained. “We did softball, volleyball, dance, cheerleading and Girl Scouts,” said Jackson. She joined hundreds of others attending the annual Kati Fisher Powder Puff Football Game at Northwest High School in Cedar Hill on Thursday. Senior girls compete against junior girls, with football players serving as coaches. This year’s game ended in a 28-28 tie. Kati’s parents started the event to help girls experience the excitement of playing football under the lights. It quickly evolved into a fundraiser for scholarships. “The amount of support we get from people who come to help us just warms our hearts,” said Bob Fisher, Kati’s father. “It’s a good thing; it feels good.” He said the annual event has raised nearly $300,000 in scholarships for Northwest High School. “The scholarships they give on senior night are absolutely amazing,” said Stella Viehland, Northwest High School building principal. Ticket and T-shirt sales help fund the scholarships. Fisher said supporters have been spotted wearing their t-shirts in other parts of the county and even other parts of the world. “They travel all around the country, all around the world, and they take pictures of them and send them back to us,” said Fisher. “It’s been a great thing.” Jackson said it’s inspiring to see how the Fisher family channeled their grief into good. She attends the annual event regularly. “It’s heartwarming and a little sad, but it’s overall a really amazing event,” Jackson said. Kati’s mother, Nancy Fisher, organizes each annual game. This year she also created a link for anyone wishing to honor Kati through scholarships for Northwest seniors.
