After defeating Hargon in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D’s DQ2 section, the real final boss appears: Malroth! He’s only teased in the most hushed whispers in a few sections of the game. It was rumored among Hargon’s lieutenants that he’s trying to summon a God to destroy the world and everyone in it, but you won’t see this foe until after you defeat Hargon.Instead of a Phase 1, Phase 2, where the final boss gets a new form like the Dragonlord, you fight a brand-new entity with new, dangerous attacks. This is a boss fight that’s going to take quite a while, just like the original NES edition. If you want to know what to do against Malroth in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, we’re here to help.Tips to defeating Malroth in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake (DQ2)Unfortunately, you don’t get a full heal between Hargon and Malroth in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, unless you have party members that level up between the fights. If needed, take the first round to bring yourself back to full health in the first round, and use skills like Wizardly Waft if necessary for more MP. Thankfully, he uses the first round to Assess the Situation so you can get ready. Other rounds, expect 2-3 actions at a time.Don't let Malroth's multiple moves a round overwhelm you (Image via Square Enix)Malroths’s attacksAssess the Situation: Does nothing.Burning Breath: Attempts to paralyze multiple members of the party.Thick Fog That Envelops Everything: Stops everyone from casting spells.Melee Attack: ~60-180 damage to a single ally. Can paralyze target.Inferno: Breath attack that deals around ~50-80 damage.Healall: Casts once, full heal.Buff: Increases defenses by a great amount.Kasap: Slightly lowers all party members’ defense.Shout: Tries to inflict Fear on multiple party members.Glares Balefully: Tries to inflict Sleep on a party member.Scorch: Breath attack that deals ~85-100 damage to all allies.Desperate Attack: Critical Hit melee for ~250 damage. There are two things that make the Malroth fight intolerable in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. The first is Thick Fog, which stops everyone from casting spells. You’ll have to use AOE healing abilities to get through his attacks for a few turns. The other is Healall. When he’s around half health or so, he’s going to cast Healall, which gives him a full heal back up to 7,500 health. There doesn’t appear to be a way to stop his Healall. He’s highly resistant to Fizzle and Rib Tickler, so it’s very hard to stop him from doing this. I’ve fought him a few times, and not once could I prevent the full heal. Just accept that this boss is going to have around 14k or so health. In theory, Puff Puff should work, but I didn’t get it out against Malroth in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. If Malroth takes the time to buff himself, use Ripple of Disruption to clear away all his buffs, if you defeated the Sea Lord Octavian. In case of a bad round, where Malroth does something like Inferno, Inferno, Melee, keep a Staff of Resurrection on someone without the Kazing spell, like the Hero.Demon Demeanor is likely going to be your go-to attack for this fight. He's also weak to Knee Drop though (Image via Square Enix)That way you have a chance to revive your allies. I recommend keeping Insulatle on at all times, and if you get Kasap applied, get someone to cast Kabuff to counteract it (Caradoc). If you want to avoid taking so much melee damage, use Peronel to cast Dazzle with a Duplic Hat. This gives you two tries to inflict the status ailment. This boss fight is just a slog, there’s no two ways about it. Here’s what I focused my party members on doing:Hero: Muster Strength, Demon Demeanor (when Oomph is applied)Caradoc: Omniheal (when needed), Ripple of Disruption for boss buffs, Kabuff, Defend (to restore MP)Matilda: Insulatle, Sap, AOE Heal Ability, Utility SpellsPerona: Oomph (Hero), Dazzle, Sap, Multiheal, Kazing, Puff PuffAt least he doesn't cast Healall more than once. . . (Image via Square Enix)Taking the time to inflict Sap until the Malroth’s defense is as low as it can go in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is important, too. It makes those Demon Demeanor blasts hit Malroth for well over 1,200 damage, when everything’s activated. That’s the damage focus in this Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake fight. Everyone else keeps the hero alive, and takes care of buffs/debuffs. After you defeat this foe, enjoy the credits, and a fun surprise.Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake combines the first two classic games in the franchise in one location. Featuring gorgeous HD-2D visuals, they also feature a wealth of quality-of-life features and upgrades, similarly to the DQ3 Remake. You can learn more about this release in our in-depth review.
