Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake’s penultimate boss is Hargon, former High Priest of the Dragon Queen. If you completed the DQ3 Remake, but are new to the franchise, you heard the name there. Hargon’s been the driving force behind the villainy of the first two Dragon Quest games, even if he wasn’t implicitly mentioned in the original game. Hargon can be an incredibly challenging foe, but he’s not impossible to beat.With a mastery of some of the strongest spells and breath attacks in the game, High Priest Hargon in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake can be punishing, if you aren’t well prepared for him. Here’s what we did to take down this fearsome foe.Tips to defeat Hargon in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake’s DQ 2Hargon is a powerful spellcaster in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, and stands against you at the end of the castle in Rendarak. Obsessed with creating a new world that he and the Queen of the Dragons can live together in peace, he’s willing to eradicate all life on the planet to do it.Hargon might not be weak to any particular spells or attacks, but Multifists sure does work! (Image via Square Enix)While Hargon doesn’t regenerate, what does make him dangerous is that he can attack between 2-3 times a round, and his actions are incredibly painful. I recommend not coming to this fight unless you have Omniheal, Kazing, Magic Barrier, and the Insulatte techniques. There are other techniques you should have in your back pocket too, like Ripple of Disruption (Octavian), Rib Tickler, and Puff Puff.I also recommend the Duplic Hat (Ultimate Key Chest in Rippleport), and give it to Peronel. She’s key to keeping the party alive with double-casts of Multiheal, and other useful spells. Below are the primary attacks that Hargon’s going to use on your party in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake.Hargon’s attacksKaboom Spell: Deals ~60-120 damage to the whole partyAchille’s Wheel: Makes party members more susceptible to damage.Burning Breath: Can paralyze multiple party members.Melee Attack: Can hit for around ~120-150 damage to a party member.Focuses as Hard as he can: Increases magical might for a few turns.Gloomstorm (when at low health): Each party members takes around 230 damage.While Hargon is certainly powerful, he’s susceptible to a surprising number of status ailments:Rib TicklerPuff-PuffFizzleDazzleGloomstorm is Hargon's ultimate spell, and it can easily shred through a party (Image via Square Enix)In addition, if he casts Focuses As Hard As He Can, you should have someone use Ripple of Disruption if you have it. It will nullify all of his buffs. Odds are high that he’ll try to re-buff, and then you can just do it again to keep him from doing too much, in terms of damage. Here’s what everyone in my party focused on:Hero: Muster Strength, Multifists (when Oomph is active)Caradoc: Omniheal when needed, Ripple of Disruption when needed, otherwise debuffs/healsMatilda: Insulatle, Debuffs, then Rib TicklerPeronel: Oomph (Hero), Magic Barrier, Multiheal, Puff PuffOnce Hargon is down into Red Health in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, you really have to beware Gloomstorm, because it can easily one-shot people if they aren’t high enough level/have enough HP. The damage strategy for me was just Oomph Hero, Muster Strength, Multifists. This would do around 800-1200 damage, and put him down pretty quick. However, there’s still one more challenge to go, once you overcome Hargon.
