AgenciesDU student attacked with acid by stalker after she stepped out for class A 19-year-old Delhi University student suffered burn injuries after being attacked with acid, allegedly by a stalker and his two associates, in northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar on Sunday.The victim, a second-year student enrolled in a non-collegiate programme, told police she was on her way to attend an additional class around 11 am when the incident occurred. Police were alerted an hour later after she was taken to a hospital with burns."She was walking towards the college when a man she knew, identified as Jitender, along with his associates Ishan and Arman, approached on a bike. Ishan allegedly handed over a bottle to Arman, who threw acid at her. The trio then fled," a senior police officer said.As the student tried to shield her face, the acid splashed onto her hands and arms, causing serious injuries, the officer added. The victim alleged that Jitender had been stalking her for nearly a year, and they had a heated argument about a month ago.Speaking to TOI, the survivor said she was on her way to submit an assignment. “I usually take a rickshaw from home and then walk the rest of the way to college. I was walking through a lane and hadn’t noticed anyone following me. Suddenly, a bike came and they attacked me and sped away,” she said.Live EventsShe instinctively used her bag to cover her face, but the chemical burned through her hands and bag. “I kept screaming for help. Somehow, I managed to reach the main road and began trying to stop passing vehicles one after another, but no one stopped. I began to feel dizzy,” she recalled.Eventually, an elderly man on a scooter stopped, called the police, and took her to a police station. She was later shifted from a nearby hospital to RML Hospital.The woman alleged that Jitender, who is married with two children, used to follow her and make obscene remarks. Last month, she confronted him and even approached his wife, after which both allegedly threatened her.Fearing for her safety, she stayed away from college for nearly a month. “I was scared for my life,” she said, adding that she wants to pursue law and a master’s degree after graduation.She had stepped out on Sunday only to submit her assignment before exams beginning December 10. “The day I finally gathered the courage to step out, I was attacked,” she said.Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections related to voluntarily causing grievous hurt using acid or corrosive substances.
