Browns Owner Reveals Timeline for Shedeur Sanders

Everyone is wondering when we will see Shedeur Sanders on the field for the Cleveland Browns this season, if we will even see him at all. The Browns selected Sanders in the fifth round of the NFL Draft back in April, a couple of rounds after they nabbed fellow quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Read more: Jets QB Justin Fields Receives Compelling Trade Prediction Gabriel has been prioritized over Sanders thus nailing down the backup role in training camp and then ultimately supplanting Joe Flacco (who was later traded) as the starter. Gabriel hasn’t looked all that impressive over his first three starts, which has many hoping that Sanders will get a shot at some point in 2025. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam dropped an update on the situation at the Fall League Meeting this week, saying that “the coaches will decide” when Sanders actually plays, via Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL media. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA – OCTOBER 12: Shedeur Sanders #12 of the Cleveland Browns warms up against the Pittsburgh Steelers before the game at Acrisure Stadium on October 12, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “Dillon has played three games, and that’s not a great sample (size). And one of them was in a monsoon. You could say he played two games,” Haslam said. “Shedeur’s making progress in practice, so we’re going continue to work with both of those guys.” Essentially, Cleveland is sticking with Gabriel for now, which shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise considering he was drafted higher than Sanders and really hasn’t gotten much of a chance yet. The general consensus among fans is that Sanders is the more talented passer and stands to have a better NFL future due to his size and arm, but clearly, the Browns feel differently. At least right now. Cleveland is just 2-5 on the season and is likely headed toward another high pick in the draft next spring, so the Browns may very well take another quarterback anyway. The 2026 class is slated to be significantly stronger than last year’s in terms of quarterback talent, so it’s entirely possible that the Browns’ franchise quarterback isn’t even currently on their roster. The Browns will face the New England Patriots on Sunday. For more on the Cleveland Browns and general NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
