Boston's Cape Verdean community celebrates World Cup berth

Antonio Alves, like many Cape Verdeans, always watched the World Cup. He just never saw his team playing in it. “I’ve dreamed about it,” Alves said. “Now, it’s this close to the reality ...” Making the World Cup, which Cape Verde did on Oct. 13, is more than an athletic accomplishment for many in the Cape Verdean community. It’s an opportunity to showcase their culture to the world and a way to connect those in the larger Cape Verdean diaspora to their roots. “I think for those folks that live abroad, it’s an opportunity to reclaim their heritage and identity and an opportunity to think about connecting around something that’s unmistakenly Cape Verdean,” Massachusetts state senator Liz Miranda said. This will be the first time Cape Verde will play in the World Cup. It will also be the second smallest country by population to qualify for the tournament.
