The Bono Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has recorded a remarkable 88 percent achievement of its active membership target for 2024, a milestone the Authority says reflects steady progress toward universal health coverage in the region. According to the Bono Regional Director of the NHIA, Isaac Amponsah, the Authority was assigned a target of 1,080,171 active members for 2024 and successfully registered 946,707, leaving a shortfall of about 133,464 members. Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, Amponsah revealed that for 2025, the Bono Region has been tasked to register 1,088,781 active members. As of August 2025, the region had already reached 939,077 members, representing 86 percent of the annual target. “With the current pace and the strategies we have adopted, we are confident that we will achieve and possibly exceed our 2025 target by the end of the year,” Amponsah stated. He disclosed that the Authority has implemented a special policy designed to support individuals facing financial challenges by offering free registration under the NHIS. So far, 574,783 vulnerable individuals have been enrolled through this initiative, ensuring that poverty does not become a barrier to accessing quality healthcare. On the issue of extortion by some healthcare providers, the Regional Director condemned the practice, describing it as a serious criminal offense that could attract imprisonment. “We are aware of a few facilities engaging in extortion, and we have launched investigations into such cases. Out of the 218 accredited public and private health facilities in the Bono Region, a number are currently being probed for these illegal acts,” he disclosed. Mr. Amponsah emphasized that the NHIA has instituted strict enforcement measures to deter such unethical conduct and restore public confidence in the health insurance system. “We will not tolerate any form of extortion or misconduct. The integrity of the NHIS must be protected at all times,” he warned. He also urged the public to report any instances of extortion, misconduct, or challenges encountered at health facilities for immediate action, assuring that the Authority is committed to swift redress and transparency in service delivery. As the Bono Region nears its 2025 target months ahead of schedule, the NHIA says it remains focused on expanding coverage, enhancing accountability, and building a fair and accessible healthcare system that reflects Ghana’s vision of universal health insurance for all.
