A man asked what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl to make him a bracelet and spray her perfume on it so he could smell her, a court has heard. Christopher Evans then told his contact to delete the messages they had been exchanging, saying they would "both be screwed" if her mother found them. Swansea Crown Court heard 55-year-old Jones was actually chatting with an adult from a so-called paedophile hunter group. The defendant's barrister said he did not want to say much about the circumstances in which his client was arrested but "there are matters which perhaps the police ought to deal with in future". Tom Scapens, prosecuting, told the court the defendant began interacting with a social media profile being operated by an online group of a type colloquially known as "paedophile hunters". He said despite the adult operating the decoy account making it clear the profile was that of a 14-yerar-old girl Jones continued to chat before phone numbers were exchanged and the communication moved to WhatsApp. The court heard during their subsequent chats the defendant encouraged what he thought was a young girl to perform sex acts on herself – telling her: "Trust me it will feel great" – and described the sex acts he wanted to perform on her as well as repeatedly asking for photographs. For the latest court stories sign up to our crime newsletter Jones told the "girl" he loved her and said that if she ever came to Swansea he would spoil her. He also said he wanted to cuddle up with her in bed and told her he had a dream where they were "making love". The defendant also talked about travelling to Norwich – where the decoy said she lived – to visit her. The court heard when the decoy talked about making bracelets Jones asked if she could make one for him and spray her perfume on it before sending it so he could smell her. He then sent the decoy his address so the bracelet could be posted to him. The prosecutor said Jones told the decoy to delete the messages between them, saying if her mother found them "we would both be screwed". The court heard that on June 5 this year a number of males attended the defendant's flat to confront him and that when police arrived one of the group was in his living room filming him. The court heard the male "continued to question Jones while police were trying to arrest him and seize his devices. Christopher Jones, of Lamberts Road in Swansea's SA1 development, had previously pleaded guilty to attempting to cause or incite a child to perform a sex act and to attempted sexual communication with a child when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has one previous conviction for one offence of theft from 2002. David Singh, for Jones, said the defendant had mental health issues and was a "very isolated individual" – including being isolated from his family – and said his loneliness had led him to engaging in behaviour "which he knows he should not have". He said his client has a range of health and mobility issues and has used a wheelchair for the last six years and he said the reality was given his physical condition "he is not a real threat to anybody for very obvious reasons". Judge Catherine Richards said it was clear Jones had been trying to "manipulate" what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl and was encouraging her to be secretive. She told the defendant he used the girl "to live out your sexual fantasies". With a one-third discount for his guilty pleas Jones was sentenced to 28 months in prison. He will serve up to half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. The defendant will be a registered sex offender for the next 10 years and was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order for the same length of time.
