Blackburn Rovers 1-3 Sheffield United: Blades Rally at Half-time to Stun Rovers in Second Half

Sheffield United secured another victory on Tuesday night as they secured a 3-1 win at Blackburn Rovers. The home side took the lead in the first half through Yuki Ohashi, but the Blades rallied after half-time and found an equaliser after an own goal from Axel Henriksson. United ensured three points with two goals in the final 20 minutes, substitute Harrison Burrows was set up on the left from a Callum O’Hare through ball, and the left-back placed the ball into the bottom right corner with help from a deflection. Burrows would then turn provider when he drilled a wonderful cross into the six-yard box for fellow super sub Tyrese Campbell to dispatch from close range in front of the away end. Lineups Blackburn: Toth, Alebiosu, Gardner-Hickman (Montgomery 78), Tronstad, Gudjohnsen (Morishita 69), Miller, De Neve, McLoughlin (Gueye 87), Wharton, Henriksson (Hedges 69), Ohashi (Karbbo 78). Unused: Pears, Pickering, Ribeiro, Forshaw. Blades: Cooper, Tanganga, McCallum (Burrows 62), Cannon (Campbell 62), Ings (Brooks 62), O’Hare (Shackleton 90), Mee, Soumaré (Riedewald 76), Ogbene, McGuinness, Peck. Unused: A. Davies, Bindon, Barry, Matos. First Half After a frantic first quarter of the match, United began to grow into the contest, forcing their first corner, but it almost proved costly as Rovers launched a rapid counter-attack with Ohashi failing to bring down a long ball from McLoughlin after finding space in behind Ben Mee. The Blades responded well, and Japhet Tanganga came close to breaking the deadlock. Sam McCallum’s corner was met by Tanganga’s outstretched foot directing the ball goalwards, only for Rovers goalkeeper Balasz Toth to produce a fantastic save. Moments later, Callum O’Hare saw his low drive kept out by Toth’s legs as United began to build momentum. However, just as the away side looked likely to strike first, Blackburn hit them with a sucker punch. In the 40th minute, a swift counter-attack saw Gudjohnsen’s cross from the right find De Neve on the far side. Though the Belgian scuffed his effort, it fortuitously dropped into the path of Ohashi, who made no mistake from close range to give Rovers a 1-0 lead heading into half-time. Second Half Sheffield United started the second half well and were rewarded for their pressure. The equaliser came from a corner, sparked by quick thinking from Djibril Soumare, who reacted fastest to Tanganga’s header. Henriksson got the final touch on the ball as it spun into his own net. Tempers flared midway through the half as Gardner-Hickman and Sydie Peck were both booked following a brief altercation instigated by the home midfielder. Shortly after, a triple substitution came for Blackburn and the Blades. The Blades’ second half turnaround was completed 20 minutes from time. O’Hare, instrumental throughout, capitalised on a loose ball 30 yards from goal and showed great composure to slip a perfectly timed pass to substitute Harrison Burrows on the left. The wing-back took one touch before placing a superb finish into the far corner, making it 2-1. As the game entered its final stages, United sealed the points with a wonderfully worked third. Andre Brooks, impressive off the bench, lofted a delicate pass down the left for Burrows, who surged forward and delivered a sumptuous low cross into the path of Tyrese Campbell. The striker made no mistake, calmly finishing from close range to cap off an excellent team move. United now move out of the bottom three for the first time this season and they’ll hope to make it three wins from their three-game week when they travel to Preston North End to face Paul Heckingbottom’s side on Friday evening.
