Assistant U.S. Attorney announces run for state house seat

Birmingham attorney Lloyd Peeples, who has been senior trial counsel for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama, announced today that he’ll be running for the Alabama House of Representatives, District 48, which covers portions of Jefferson and Shelby counties. “I’ve spent most of my professional career serving the public as a federal prosecutor, standing beside victims, holding criminals accountable, and working to make our communities safer,” Peeples said in a statement released today. “I’m also a small business owner, a husband, and a dad raising two kids right here in this district. I want to help strengthen our district and state so that our children have more opportunities than we did and don’t leave after graduation because they don’t see a path to build their own careers here.” Peeples is seeking the seat currently held by State Rep. Jim Carns, a Republican from Vestavia Hills, who on Wednesday was endorsed by the Alabama Farmers Federation. Peeples has prosecuted high-profile cases including Joran van der Sloot and the Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney kidnappers. He has also served previously as CEO of his family’s business, Container Service Corporation, which makes corrugated boxes. “Alabama has some great leaders, but it also needs more problem solvers,” Peeples said. “My commitment is simple: every dollar the state spends should deliver real value to the people it serves. The people of our district work hard, pay their taxes, and deserve to know their money is being used wisely. No matter how accountable government tries to be, there will always be waste and misplaced priorities. In Montgomery, I’ll fight to eliminate waste, reduce unnecessary bureaucracy, improve transparency, and focus on results-driven spending - making government more efficient and delivering more back to our communities without cutting essential services.”
