Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government has announced the establishment of eight new Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs) in government hospitals across the state, with an addition of 80 new beds (warmers). The announcement was made by Health, Family Welfare, and Medical Education Minister Satya Kumar Yadav. According to the news reports, each unit is estimated to cost around Rs 60 lakh, bringing the total investment for all eight units to Rs 4.80 crore. The monthly operational cost for each unit is projected at Rs 8.91 lakh, amounting to approximately Rs 1.07 crore for all units.Also Read:Cyclone Montha: Andhra Pradesh unveils 3-tier disease control planSpeaking to the Hindu, the Health Minister said that these units would be run in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. Services in four of them, proposed at Amalapuram Area Hospital, Kuppam Area Hospital, Guntakal Area Hospital, and Yemmiganur Community Health Centre, will begin by the end of the month.The new units at Nuzvid, Kavali, Kadiri, and Srikalahasti will also become operational soon, the Minister added. Currently, the state has 62 SNCUs, out of which 28 are run by the government. These units are located in teaching hospitals, district hospitals, area hospitals, and community health centres (CHCs). Of these, 11 units have 10 warmers each, while 23 units have 5 warmers each, providing emergency neonatal care to infants in need. The Minister noted that neonatal centres have already been set up in Anakapalli, Prathipadu, Hindupur, and Nandyal. The Special Newborn Care Units provide care for babies from birth until 28 days and treat conditions such as low birth weight, neonatal jaundice, hypothermia, respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and sepsis, among other conditions.
