Atlas is one of the major bosses in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, and one of Hargon’s top lieutenants. A horrific demon pulled from another realm, he’s also one of the harder boss fights in the game. A very melee-focused battle, you’ll have to fight Atlas a couple of times in the game. Nonetheless, both fights will play out more or less the same, provided you have the same tools at your disposal. In the first fight with Atlas, he doesn’t really take your party seriously, but he’ll put all his effort in on the second boss battle in the DQ2 section of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake. If you’re struggling, here’s what you need to do to overcome this foe.Tips to defeat Atlas in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D RemakeDragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake’s Atlas hits incredibly hard, but there are some very easy ways to put a stop to most of his assault. He’s got a few status ailments you can (and should) spam on him, to prevent, or at least reduce the chances that he’ll smash through your party for hundreds of damage.Atlas, with just two strikes can decimate your party (Image via Square Enix)If Matilda isn’t buffing or healing, she needs to be on Rib Tickler duty, to make Atlas squirm and giggle. That completely takes away at least one, maybe two turns. You should make sure Perona has the Duplic Hat (Rippleport Ultimate Key Chest) for the second fight with Atlas. This gives you two casts on all spells, making it easier for Dazzle to be inflicted. You can also use Puff Puff on him with Perona, to take away his turn. Below is a list of his most common attacks/damage:Atlas attacksMelee Attack: Hits for around 115-150 damage.Desperate Attack: A critical strike that hits for around 250-350 damage.Smashes Down From Above: An AOE melee hit that hits all party members for ~100-150 damage.Musters Every Last Ounce of Strength: Doubles/Triples damage to make the next few rounds very painful.Asseses the Situation: Does nothingThe worst thing that could happen in this fight is a Desperate Attack followed by Smashes Down From Above. This can nearly wipe your entire party. If you’ve taken the time to prep with buffs/debuffs, it’s recoverable, though. Dazzle can be a really serious life saver in the Atlas fight in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake.Rib Tickler really works, I promise! In this game, bosses can actually be hit with status ailments (Image via Square Enix)By now you should have Kazing to revive people, and the Staff of Resurrection, just in case. You also should likely have Ripple of Disruption if you did the Living Memories quest and fought the Sea Lords. If so, and Atlas uses his Musters Strength, Ripple that away immediately. Otherwise, if Dazzle or Rib Tickler aren’t in play, he’s going to very likely start one-shotting party members. The primary combat strategy is one you might be familiar with by now. Oomph and Muster Strength the Hero, and then hit the boss’s weakness: Demon Demeanor. Multifists also works, but I prefer Demon Demeanor. If Hero gets into Yellow Health, charge your sigil (hold square) when activating Muster Strength to make it even better. You should easily get around 1,200+ damage a strike before Yellow Health. The real danger kicks into high gear when Atlas in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake drops into Yellow Health. He has a higher chance to Smash Down back-to-back, which is a seriously high amount of damage. Be ready with Multiheal/Omniheal when necessary. The most important thing in this boss fight is to nullify the chance that Atlas can hit you.Just take your time, and let the Hero do the heavy lifting (Image via Square Enix)Recommended commandsHero: Muster Strength, Demon Demeanor, Staff of Resurrection (if necessary)Caradoc: Fullheal/Omniheal, Ripple of Disruption, Kabuff, Defend (if nothing else is needed, regens MP)Matilda: Rib Tickler, Spot HealsPeronel: Oomph, Dazzle, Heals, Puff PuffWhile Atlas doesn’t have a lot of attacks in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, he makes up for it by dealing massive amounts of damage. You should have at least one character with Multiheal, two if you completed the Living Memories side quest for the Fairies. Once you’ve bested Atlas for the final time, get ready for the High Priest himself.Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake combines the first two classic games in the franchise in one location. Featuring gorgeous HD-2D visuals, they also feature a wealth of quality-of-life features and upgrades, similarly to the DQ3 Remake. You can learn more about this release in our in-depth review.
