Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake: How to defeat Green Dragon (DQ1)

Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake’s DQ1 still features a deadly Green Dragon boss fight. In the original DQ1, this was one of the only bosses in the game, other than the Knight-Errant, and the Dragonlord. Before you can rescue Princess Gwaelin in the Quagmire Cave, you’re going to have to duke it out with the mighty Green Dragon, one of the Dragonlord’s minions. While powerful, it’s nothing you can’t handle as the Descendant of Erdrick. No matter which difficulty you’re playing on, this is a boss you can overcome. Thankfully, it’s not a boss that regenerates, either. If you want to know what the Green Dragon can do, and how you can overcome it in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, I’m here to help.Tips to defeat the Green Dragon in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake (DQ1)The Green Dragon in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is all that stands between you and Princess Gwaelin. Interestingly enough, though he is a Dragon-type, he’s not weak to the Zap line of spells, like the Dragonlord is. You can however, feel free to spam Dragon Slash, as it will no doubt be better than your melee. If you get lucky enough to Cop Out deflect one of these, that's a ton of free damage (Image via Square Enix)While I did see all of Green Dragon’s attacks, weirdly, his Fire Breath was only hitting me for 3 damage, and I didn’t even have Insulatle yet. It was likely the defense buff from my Fairy Foil, and any of my breath-resistant equipment I may have had equipped. Nonetheless, here are the attacks the Green Dragon can use in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake.Green Dragon’s attacksWildfire: Flame attack that deals 15-40 damage.Melee Attack: Around 25-50 damage.Shouts Suddenly: Temporary Fear.Desperate attack: A guaranteed critical if it hits, dealing around 110-120 damage.Takes a walk on the Wild Side: Temporarily gains two actions instead of one. (Yellow Health)Fire Breath: Deals a minimal amount of damage. This particular boss fight isn’t terrible, unless it uses a Desperate Attack. That took me from half health to dead in short order. He doesn’t use it very often at least, but still, try to keep Fairy Foil’s defense boost up, as well as try to stay over half hp.I have no idea why the Flame Breath hit me for almost nothing, but at most, it hit for 5. (Image via Square Enix)The Green Dragon fight in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake can feel like a bit of a slog, as far as boss fights go, so I also recommend having at least one MP-restoring item on hand. You’re going to need to cast Moreheal and possibly Reheal quite a few times in this fight.Fairy Foil, when used as an item does a lot to increase your defenses, so that’ll cut down on everything other than those Desperate Attacks. When the Green Dragon gets to around half health (Yellow Name), that’s when it’s going to start using Wild Side so it gets to double its actions per round.Having high defenses, thanks to equipment like Tectonic Plate, Tempest Shield, and Phantom Mask definitely helped, as did the Orochi Sword as my weapon of choice. This boss’s breath weapons aren’t devastating, so just keep something like Reheal active if you’re in a pinch. If you are worried about MP, use melee instead of Dragon Slash, and conserve MP for healing. When you have succeeded in this Green Dragon boss fight, enjoy your cutscene, and return to Tantegel to celebrate!Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake combines the first two classic games in the franchise in one location. Featuring gorgeous HD-2D visuals, they also feature a wealth of quality-of-life features and upgrades, similarly to the DQ3 Remake. You can learn more about this release in our in-depth review.
