A. Sabu, member secretary, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, has declined his nomination as a representative of the Senate of the University of Calicut for the search-cum-selection committee to choose its new Vice-Chancellor (V-C). Mr. Sabu is reported to have intimated his decision to the office of the university registrar. This comes after Governor and Chancellor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar constituted the search committee by including Eluvathingal D. Jemmis, National Science Chair professor, Department of lnorganic and Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, as the Chancellor’s nominee and Ravindra D. Kulkarni, V-C, University of Mumbai, as the nominee of the University Grants Commission. Reports said that Mr. Sabu cited professional commitments for declining the post. He was nominated by the Senate at a meeting held on October 30. Earlier, the Senate had chosen Dharmaraj Adat, former V-C, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, as its nominee at a special meeting on August 23. However, he too declined the proposal. Though the Senate met again on September 11, a decision remained elusive. It is not yet clear if Mr. Sabu’s decision to keep off from the post will stand legal scrutiny as the Chancellor had already constituted the panel before he took the step.
