Following backlash over a list of 175 individuals for presidential pardons, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the removal of individuals convicted of serious crimes, including drug-related offences, kidnapping, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal firearms possession or trafficking from the list. A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday confirmed that President Tinubu approved the final list of individuals granted clemency and signed the Instrument of Presidential Prerogative of Mercy (Grant of Pardon), 2025. The review also led to the commutation of sentences for some individuals who were previously pardoned under the old list. According to the official document, those granted pardon include Mrs Anastasia Daniel Nwaobia, Barrister Hussaini Alhaji Umar, Ayinla Saadu Alanamu, Hon. Farouk M. Lawan, Herbert Macaulay, Major General Mamman Jiya Vatsa, Ken Saro Wiwa, Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuale, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine. ALSO READ: FG promises conducive environment for private energy investors Similarly, the Instrument of Presidential Prerogative of Mercy (Commutation of Death Sentence to Life Imprisonment), 2025 shows that the President commuted the death sentences of Emmanuel Baba, Abubakar Usman, Khalifa Umar, and Mohammed Umar to life imprisonment.
