The San Francisco 49ers continue to deal with multiple injuries, but one that is consistently a bit confusing is the return of Brock Purdy. Initially, it was believed the star quarterback would be back in Week 9 against the New York Giants, but that might not be the case. More news: Giants Cam Skattebo Releases Statement After Season-Ending Injury Surgery Head coach Kyle Shanahan offered an update on the return of Purdy, but his update was far more cryptic than expected. #49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that while it's too early to tell this week for QB Brock Purdy, it's not a long-shot. "We'll see how he's doing on Wednesday."— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 27, 2025 Shanhan spoke to reporters about the return of Purdy, but instead of outright stating that the quarterback would be back in Week 9, he stated, “We’ll see how he’s doing on Wednesday.” While Shanahan’s update is technically coach speak that most head coaches would say, Purdy has been trying to return to action for multiple weeks. He suffered a turf toe injury in Week 1 that led to two missed games. Brock Purdy #13 of the San Francisco 49ers looks on as he runs during an NFL football game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Levi’s Stadium on December 11, 2022 in Santa Clara, California. More news: Vikings’ Facing Tough QB Situation as Carson Wentz Will Have Season-Ending Injury Purdy would return in Week 4, but he aggravated the injury, leading to his missing the last four games. In his absence, Mac Jones had been under center, posting a 4-2 record in his six starts. Even with the mounting injuries, the 49ers are currently 5-3 on the season. They remain near the top of the NFC West, and are looking to get back Purdy, Ricky Pearsall, and more. Brandon Aiyuk even received a huge update that he may return to practice in the coming weeks. Though Jones has filled in and played well, the 49ers are better with Purdy running the show. Unfortunately, it sounds like Purdy is not guaranteed to suit up in Week 9. Shanahan is being cautious with stating the star quarterback will play if he cannot, which makes sense. The hope for the 49ers is that Purdy can play in Week 9 and that his turf toe injury will not resurface again this season. For more on the 49ers and the NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
