A self-described “socialist socialite” is getting mocked mercilessly online for failing to recognize legendary actor Wallace Shawn’s most famous roles — after meeting him to campaign for Zohran Mamdani. Ella Devi, 18, sparked immediate scorn when she posted a selfie with the 81-year-old star of stage and screen in Manhattan on Sunday — but only acknowledged him as “the actor who plays Dr. Sturgis” in the CBS show “Young Sheldon.” “Canvassing for @ZohranKMamdani in the east village today and the actor who plays dr. strugis in young sheldon is in my canvassing group!!” she wrote alongside the snap. The photo quickly went viral as she was widely trolled for glossing over Shawn’s decades-long acting career — including his notable role as the cackling kidnapper Vizzini in “The Princess Bride.” “Inconceivable!” scores of people responded on X. “Wallace Shawn erasure is crazy,” another griped. “He is a legend much bigger than that role,” one more chimed in. Another added, “He was in far better roles… Princess Bride being one of them. You need to widen your art and culture a bit. There’s a history of great storytelling and young Sheldon is not one of them.” Shawn, who has a long history of socialist politics, also voiced neurotic dino Rex in “Toy Story,” played Mr. Hall in “Clueless” and appeared in numerous Woody Allen flicks, including “Manhattan.” The GenZer, for her part, leaned into the mounting backlash — arguing she was too young to know any different. “’Put some respect on wallace shawn.’ i am only 18 and have only seen him in young sheldon i’m sorry!!!” Devi wrote on X. “Old people! if you have time to yell at me to go watch the princess bride you have time to canvass or phone bank,” she added. “Canvassing shift done! knocked on roughly 100 doors + freaked out thousands of old people because i forgot wallace shawn was in clueless.” Devi, who boasts more than 20,000 followers in Instagram and X, has been documenting her volunteer status with Mamdani’s campaign all over her social media.
