Michigan-based confectionery brand Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory has issued an urgent recall of two of its signature candy bars over the risk of undeclared nut allergens, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this week. The recall, issued on October 24, affects the company’s Peanut Butter Crush and Ca$hew Cow bars, both sold in full-size packaging. The FDA said the Peanut Butter Crush bars may contain undeclared cashews, while the Ca$hew Cow bars may contain undeclared peanuts, posing a serious or potentially fatal risk to those with nut allergies. “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to cashews or peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” Zingerman’s said in a statement shared by the FDA. The affected candy bars were distributed to retailers in Michigan and New York, with both varieties marked with Lot #174250. The Peanut Butter Crush bars were sold in yellow and purple packaging, while the Ca$hew Cow bars came in light blue and yellow boxes. Packaging Breakdown Triggered Recall According to Zingerman’s, the recall was prompted after the company discovered that Peanut Butter Crush bars were packaged without labelling cashew content, and Ca$hew Cow bars lacked peanut allergen warnings. An internal investigation later determined the mix-up resulted from a “temporary breakdown in the production and packaging process.” While no illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported so far, the company said it has taken immediate corrective measures to prevent future errors. “We have taken steps to make sure the problem has been resolved,” Zingerman’s said. The recall’s timing, less than a week before Halloween, has drawn concern from parents and allergy advocates, given the widespread distribution of candy during the holiday. The FDA has urged consumers to check all purchased Zingerman’s candy for the Lot #174250 marking and to avoid consumption if there is any uncertainty about the product’s contents. Refund and Safety Information Consumers who purchased the recalled bars are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. For additional information, Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory can be contacted through its official website or customer service hotline listed on the FDA’s recall notice. The FDA continues to monitor the recall as a Class I incident, the most serious category, which denotes a potentially life-threatening health risk.
