In a continent rich with stories waiting to be told, one Zimbabwean writer is using her ink to shine a light on the untold. Meet Tatenda Kombora — a talented young Zimbabwean writer and director with a passion for capturing Africa’s vibrant cultures and hidden narratives. With a camera in hand and a story to tell, Tatenda is carving her path in the world of filmmaking. From presenting popular TV shows to advocating for social change, this 25-year-old is determined to make her mark on the Zimbabwean and African film industry. Following up on her journey, Tatenda is currently one of two Zimbabwean representatives in the 2025–2026 class of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) Academy. Her participation in the program is a testament to her passion for storytelling and filmmaking. Commenting on her experience with the MTF Academy, a visibly excited Kombora highlighted that the program has been both rewarding and eye-opening — particularly by providing deeper insights into various aspects of filmmaking, including storytelling, script development, directing, cinematography, and production. “The MTF program is not only sharpening my technical and creative skills, but it also inspired me to think bigger about the kind of filmmaker I want to become and the impact I want my stories to make” Kombora pointed out. Asked about the specific skills and knowledge she is eager to develop during her time at the academy, Tatenda indicated that she is looking forward to acquiring the tools to create authentic African narratives that resonate both locally and globally. Furthermore, she anticipates developing stronger technical expertise in cinematography, editing, and sound design to translate stories from page to screen with greater precision and artistry. “I am also very eager to learn more about the business side of filmmaking. Aspects such as production, management, budgeting, marketing, and distribution are key, because I believe that telling a story is one part — but ensuring it reaches the right audience is equally important,” Kombora added. This illustrates that Tatenda is passionate, enthusiastic about learning, and cognisant of the significant role the MTF program will play in nurturing her creative talent and driving growth in the creative industry. Kombora’s goals and aspirations are to become Africa’s leading documentary filmmaker, creating films that fuse the continent’s rich storytelling traditions and cultural heritage with modern cinematic techniques. Accordingly, Tatenda’s biggest expectations from the MTF program are centered on growth, exposure, and opportunities to tell African stories to a global audience with professionalism and exceptional technique. To achieve her aspirations, Kombora believes that ‘discipline, teamwork, accountability, respect, and commitment are the essential ingredients for success in the film industry.’ As Tatenda Kombora cherishes the opportunity to be part of the MTF Class of 2025–2026, her story serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring filmmakers across Zimbabwe and Africa. With her talent, passion, and dedication, she is poised to make a lasting impact on the continent’s film industry — telling stories that inspire, educate, and entertain audiences worldwide.
