Quick commerce giant Zepto has not been spending money frivolously. Instead, it is doing it consciously and with discipline, said Zepto Co-founder Kaivalya Vohra at TechSparks 2025. “There are a lot of companies in India and globally that have wasted a lot of money and don't have a lot to show for it at the same time. It takes a lot of intellectual honesty to know what the difference is between frivolous spending, where fundamentally the things just don't make sense, or very consciously investing in growth,” said Vohra during a fireside chat with YourStory Founder and CEO Shradha Sharma. Now that could be anything, he added, from acquiring new users to opening in new cities. "But that intellectual honesty is very important, and we've demonstrated that over and over again,” the 22-year-old co-founder said. Speaking at the 16th edition of YourStory’s flagship event, TechSparks 2025, Vohra said Zepto could choose to be profitable at a lower growth rate, but it wants to capture the market opportunity. “Do I want to just be profitable at scale and grow 20–30% a year and let that compound? That’s one choice you can take." He continued, "Or you can say, this is the largest retail market in the country. There’s a crazy amount of money people spend on groceries and retail overall—probably a trillion dollars, with groceries alone around $700 billion—and we’re just 0.1% of the way there.” Vohra’s comments come after Zepto raised a fresh funding of $450 million, giving it new ammunition to take on rivals Swiggy Instamart and market leader Blinkit in an already bruising battle. Meanwhile, the quick commerce company has been seeing multiple senior-level exits recently. YourStory was the first to report on the exit of Zepto Cafe head Shashank Shekhar Sharma. This week, Zepto confirmed the exit of Chandan Rungta, Chief Executive for its meat business, Relish. Besides Rungta, Apoorv Pandey, SVP of Strategy, and Chandresh Dedhia, VP and Head of Information Technology at the company, also parted ways. (Edited by Suman Singh)
