According to a report from the New York Post, former New York Yankees player Don Mattingly may retire from baseball after 36 seasons. Mattingly played 12 seasons in MLB with the Yankees before moving on to a coaching and managerial role. After his long career in the game and him finally reaching the World Series as a Toronto coach, Mattingly is reportedly pondering whether he should retire. (Photo by Victor Decolongon/Getty Images) In a story on The New York Post, MLB insider Jon Heyman reported that stepping away from the game for good is a real possibility. “Could legendary Yankee Don Mattingly call it a career after the World Series?,” Heyman wrote in his story. “Friends suggest they believe retirement is a possibility for Mattingly, the surprise Yankees superstar of the 1980s and early 1990s who fashioned a wonderful 22-year managing and coaching career with the Yankees, Dodgers, Marlins and Jays and reached his first World Series with Toronto 44 years after breaking in with the Bombers.” More news: Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Has 6-Word Response to Drake vs Kendrick Lamar Debate He added: “Mattingly, 64, when asked by The Post if he might want to manage again, responded: ‘At this point in my life and my career, it’s kind of like, at the end of it. You’re like, what’s next, right? Or is there anything next?’ “That answer raised an obvious question: Could this be the end? Mattingly was coy when asked about the retirement possibility, saying: ‘You never know, you never know.'” As a player or coach, Mattingly had not reached a World Series until this season, despite being highly regarded in both positions. He won an MVP award during his playing career, and despite playing for the Yankees — a successful team throughout history — Mattingly was unlucky to play during a low point for the team. Considering all the time he has given to baseball and the many players whom he has helped as a coach, the legend has provided more than enough, and he would have an incredible career when he stepped away. His current Blue Jays team is just three wins away from a title, leading the Dodgers 1-0. Mattingly could be set for a storybook ending.
