Prince William has opened up about his and Kate’s decision to tell their three children “everything” about her cancer diagnosis, and the “difficult questions” the couple faced. Both King Charles and the Princess of Wales revealed they were battling the disease early last year, leading to a period which William later admitted was the “hardest” of his life. Speaking to a Brazilian television program while in Rio de Janeiro for his Earthshot Prize Awards, William explained that he and Kate had chosen to go for full honesty with Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven, as they grappled with the family’s health challenges. Kate announced she had completed her round of preventative chemotherapy last September, and that she was in remission earlier this year. Picture: Instagram Acknowledging that every family has its own “difficulty and challenges”, William told TV host Luciano Hack that he and Kate had second-guessed their own approach as they navigated their way through it. “I think it is very individual and moment-dependent as to how you deal with those problems. We chose to communicate a lot more with our children. That has its good things and its bad things; maybe we share things with the children that we shouldn’t,” the prince said. “But most of the time, hiding stuff from them doesn’t work and so explaining how they feel, why that’s happening, giving them other viewpoints as to why they might be feeling like they are. “Sometimes it helps give them a bigger picture so they can relax more into it rather than them thinking what are you hiding, what do I not know, why is that happening. “There is a lot more questions if there are no answers. But it is always a balancing act as any parent will say. It’s always ‘how much do I say?’ and ‘when do I say?’ “There’s no manual for being a parent, you’ve just got to go with it – and use a bit of instinct.” William spoke candidly about the challenges he and Kate faced as parents navigating her cancer diagnosis. Picture: Samir Hussein/WireImage During the interview, William also opened up about his and Kate’s stance on mobile phones. He recently revealed none of their children have their own device, while Kate has written a personal essay about the damage that screens are doing to real-life relationships. With their eldest son George fast approaching his teen years, the future king admitted they were considering lifting the phone ban. “It is really hard. Our children don’t have phones. When George moves onto secondary school, maybe he’ll have one with limited access,” William said. “It’s getting to the point where it is becoming a bit of a tense issue. But I think he understands why, we communicate why we don’t think it’s right. “I think it’s the full internet access I have a problem with, children can access too much stuff they don’t need to see online but having a phone with text messages, the old-style brick phones like we used to call them, that’s fine.” William also opened up about their stance on kids’ having mobile phones. Picture: Aaron Chown - WPA Pool/Getty Images William’s subtle swipe at Andrew: ‘Change’ The TV interview comes just days after William appeared to take a subtle jab at the scandal surrounding his uncle, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, while speaking to reporters in Brazil as part of his environmental initiative. During an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour as part of The Earthshot Prize Impact Assembly, the future King was asked about his candid recent appearance on Eugene Levy’s The Reluctant Traveller. During his interview with Levy, William had said: “I think it’s safe to say that change is on my agenda. Change for good. And I embrace that and I enjoy that change — I don’t fear it.” Referencing those comments, Amanpour asked what he has planned, “given there has been a lot of change in your family recently.” “I think the Earthshot Prize is a classic example of change. Rather than talk about it, we’re doing it. That’s where I want it to be, is that, these people in here are the true, actual heroes of our time. Change will come by backing them, not by what I do,” William answered diplomatically. “I want to surround myself with people who want to make change and do good in the world.” More Coverage ‘No apology’: Harry issues defiant message ‘Change’: William’s public swipe at Andrew Amanpour then asked: “Is that what you meant when you told Eugene that you want your son to be proud of that kind of change?” “Yeah, I think it’s really important,” William said. “Again, you have to provide leadership and a vision that there’s good things to come and that it’s not all negative. And for my children, particularly, knowing the planet’s going to be in a healthier, better state because of the brilliant people in this room is something that I love to tell them when they go to bed.” Join the conversation (0 Comments) Add your comment to this story To join the conversation, please log in.
