The Balkanization Of Democratic Party: Did Inclusivity Lead To Everyone Eating Their Own?

Despite sweeping election wins for the Democratic Party, a new poll published Friday shows that Democratic voters are still largely unsure of who is actually leading them. Politico’s poll found that among Democratic voters who cast ballots for Kamala Harris in 2024, 21% said they don’t know who is leading their party. Ten and a half percent said nobody. Harris herself garnered the most support out of her fellow Democrats, with 16.1%. (Subscribe to MR. (2024 Harris voters sampled) Don’t know – 21.0% Kamala Harris – 16.1% Nobody – 10.5% Chuck Schumer – 7.7% Hakeem Jeffries – 7.4% Barack Obama – 7.4% Gavin Newsom – 6.2% Joe Biden – 4.4% Ken Martin – 2.2% Bernie Sanders – 1.9%… pic.twitter.com/vEcyWcTu6k — InteractivePolls (@IAPolls2022) November 7, 2025 Gavin Newsom, who has been generating buzz for his tough stance against the Trump administration, polled at 6.2%, behind Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and Barack Obama. (RELATED: Voters Give Gavin Newsom Green Light To Gerrymander California) Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez barely notched 1%, and the New York City mayor-elect, socialist Zohran Mamdani, tallied 0.3%. And, hilariously enough, Donald Trump actually polled better than Cory Booker, Tim Walz, Josh Shapiro, Pete Buttigieg, Mamdani, and JB Pritzker. This poll is only a snapshot, but it still indicates that the Democratic Party’s future is quite foggy, despite their bruising of the GOP on Election Day. Yes, they might have had a convincing win in Virginia, with Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle Sears by 15 points. And there is certainly a lot of excitement around Zohran Mamdani’s victory, even though it was in a deep blue city and driven by young, white, college-educated transplants. But, as Scott Jennings argued in a post-election analysis, politicians like Mamdani and Jay Jones — who won the attorney general race in Virginia even though he fantasized about putting bullets in a Republican’s kids — may end up becoming serious liabilities as the midterms approach. What if Mamdani utterly fails? Will the Democratic Party really want to hitch its wagon to his agenda if New York City sees a massive drain of capital, thanks to higher taxes? Do Democrats understand that every Republican will cut ads highlighting the Jones text scandal? (RELATED: Scott Jennings Says What We’re All Thinking About Democrats’ Victories) And it is also telling that Harris voters still think she is the best option. Perhaps it is pure self-delusion, or it is that they still prefer that brand of politics — more establishment and center-left — to the anti-establishment politics of someone like Bernie Sanders or AOC. Maybe the Democratic Party has become too balkanized, with the far-left eating up their own, for any single person to emerge and keep the bickering coalitions united in a front against Republicans and the Trump administration. Since Trump took office, the centrists of the party have tried to keep each faction under a larger tent, focused strictly on attacking the GOP and Trump. Establishment figures, such as Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, haven’t condemned the rising influence of far-left socialists, like Mamdani, but have sought a middle, inclusive road. For example, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries held out for as long as possible endorsing Mamdani, until he finally bent the knee. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also endorsed Mamdani, yet tellingly, Mamdani’s campaign refused to endorse her bid for reelection. But, Sunday, another Democratic civil war exploded into full view after eight Democratic Senators joined Republicans in a deal to reopen the government. Almost immediately, the progressive left lashed out at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who has tried (and failed) to keep them in line. “Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced. If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?” Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna chided. Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced. Seth Moulton, who recently launched a primary challenge against Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, said. “If @ChuckSchumer were an effective leader, he would have united his caucus to vote ‘No’ tonight and hold the line on healthcare.” Tonight is another example of why we need new leadership. If @ChuckSchumer were an effective leader, he would have united his caucus to vote ‘No’ tonight and hold the line on healthcare. Maybe now @EdMarkey will finally join me in pledging not to vote for Schumer? — Seth Moulton (@sethmoulton) November 10, 2025 Ocasio-Cortez also chided Senate Democrats. The average monthly SNAP benefit is $177 a person. The average ACA benefit is up to $550 a person/mo. People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives. Working people want leaders whose word means something. — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) November 10, 2025 In light of the shutdown news Sunday night, Politico’s poll appears even more damning. Democrats are as rudderless as ever, and confirmed that even if there were a clear leader in the party it certainly would not be Schumer. Sign up for John Loftus’s weekly newsletter here!
