A photo of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav with his grandchildren has sparked a political firestorm ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections. The photo - along with a few videos - was shared by Lalu's daughter Rohini Acharya on X and shows the former Bihar chief minister celebrating the Western festival of Halloween. Posting the picture and the videos to X, Rohini wrote, "Happy Halloween to everyone". The visuals show Lalu Prasad smiling and posing for pictures with his grandchildren who are dressed in Halloween costumes. The BJP, however, lashed out at Lalu's apparent hypocrisy and sought to remind him of his insensitive remark on the Kumbh festival just a few months ago. The BJP Kisan Morcha wrote: "Don't forget, people of Bihar, this is the same Lalu Yadav who had called the grand festival of faith and spirituality Maha Kumbh useless and is now celebrating the festival of Halloween. Those who attack faith will not get votes from the people of Bihar." Lalu had referred to the Maha Kumbh as "meaningless" in February this year, when asked about the massive turnout at Prayagraj for the religious event. "The Kumbh has no meaning… It is just meaningless," he had said. He had been sharply criticised by the BJP at the time. Bihar BJP spokesperson Manoj Sharma had responded, saying, "He is making such comments due to his politics of appeasement. The RJD leaders have always insulted the religious sentiments of Hindus. The latest statement of Lalu Prasad calling the Maha Kumbh meaningless exposes the party’s mindset towards the Hindu religion." The fresh controversy comes just days before the Bihar elections. Phase one of polling for the 243-seat Assembly is scheduled for November 6, which will be followed by phase two on November 11. Counting will take place on November 14.
