Why Sharad Pawar Is Backing a Probe Into Grandnephew Parth Pawar's Rs 1,800 Cr Pune Land Controversy

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday said Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should conduct a fair probe into the controversial Pune land deal allegedly linked to a company associated with his grandnephew, Parth Pawar. "The chief minister has said publicly that the matter is serious. So, he should investigate it and put the facts before the people," Pawar told reporters in Akola. The controversy involves the alleged sale of 40 acres of government land in Pune’s Mundhwa area, reportedly valued at around Rs 1,800 crore. Opposition leaders allege that a company linked to Parth Pawar — son of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar — bought the land for just Rs 300 crore, with the deal benefiting from a stamp duty waiver. Ajit Pawar has already distanced himself from the transaction. When asked if his nephew was being politically targeted by Mahayuti allies, Sharad Pawar said, "I wouldn’t know." The veteran leader also appeared to differ with his daughter and NCP MP Supriya Sule, who had defended Parth, saying she didn’t believe he would do anything wrong. "That could be her view," Pawar said, adding that "administration, politics, and family are different matters." "As a family, we are one, but we are divided ideologically. One of my grandnephews contested against Ajit Pawar, and Ajit’s wife had contested against my daughter," he said. On the upcoming local body elections, Pawar said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partners would decide their strategy collectively. “We (NCP-SP) are meeting tomorrow to take a call on our poll strategy and on bringing new partners into our fold,” he said, hinting at possible cooperation with Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. "If a good alternative emerges through consensus in the MVA, the Congress should not take an extreme stance on the MNS and should consider the proposal. We will discuss this tomorrow," he said. Criticising the state government over farm distress, Pawar said the Mahayuti administration had failed to provide timely relief to farmers hit by heavy rains.
